Lawnmowers, hedge trimmers, and strimmers for example, all require electricity yet if you were to accidentally slice through an electrical cable, the resulting electric shock could kill you, or start a fire. RCDs can be used on any plug socket used to plug in an electrical device. Basically, these devices will immediately shut off electricity supplies automatically if any sort of fault is detected. Basically it can switch off exposed live wires in milliseconds, before it is able to shock you.

Let’s face it, an outdoor light on your patio may look attractive, but a long black cable snaking its way over your garden won’t look very neat and tidy. However, you should never run bare live cables under grass or soil as this could potentially be disastrous. Say you’re digging in the garden, and plunge your metal garden fork deep into the ground, and cut right through a live cable. If there was no RCD fitted you could potentially die in a matter of milliseconds. If you are running electrical wiring underground, make sure you use specially designed housing that covers the bare wires and protects them so if you do dig into the ground, you hit the housing rather than the live wire.
