Electrical safety is certainly not something to be sniffed at, as knowing how to be safe when working with, and around live electricity can literally be the difference between life and death. When working with electricity supplies outdoors for example, safety products such as GRP housings enclosures have proven extremely popular and very effective when it comes to electrical safety outdoors. Although electricity is predominantly found indoors, many homes all over the world also have electricity supplied outdoors as well, whether it for lighting, or simply for making weekly tasks such as gardening and cutting the grass that little bit easier.

As you probably know, water and electricity do not mix, and it’s probably pretty safe to say that we see our fair share of rain each year, so combine the two and you’re just asking for trouble. If you take the correct precautions however, and know what you’re doing, having electricity supplies outdoors can be just as safe as anywhere else. For that reason, here’s a look at three of the safest ways of keeping outdoor electrical supplies safe.

Use RCDs

RCDs, or Residual Current Devices, are potentially life-saving devices that are extremely easy to purchase and install, and as mentioned, could literally be the difference between life and death. As mentioned, one of the main reasons why we use electricity supplies outdoors is for gardening purposes, mainly during the summer. Lawnmowers, hedge trimmers, and strimmers for example, all require electricity yet if you were to accidentally slice through an electrical cable, the resulting electric shock could kill you, or start a fire. RCDs can be used on any plug socket used to plug in an electrical device. Basically, these devices will immediately shut off electricity supplies automatically if any sort of fault is detected. Basically it can switch off exposed live wires in milliseconds, before it is able to shock you.

GRP Housings Enclosures

GRP housings enclosures are specially designed boxes and enclosures used to house electrical supplies and components outside, protecting them against the elements, as well as providing protection for animals, children, and anybody else who may accidentally come into contact with the electricity supplies without realising. They can also be used indoors, for pretty much the same purpose. The box is watertight, is environmentally friendly, features a handle which can be padlocked shut, and make it so you can keep electricity supplies safe, which minimal maintenance required.

Never Run Bare Live Cables under Grass or Soil

When powering pumps for ponds, or outdoor lighting, it can be tempting to run the cable used to power these devices under the ground to help provide a neater finish. Let’s face it, an outdoor light on your patio may look attractive, but a long black cable snaking its way over your garden won’t look very neat and tidy. However, you should never run bare live cables under grass or soil as this could potentially be disastrous. Say you’re digging in the garden, and plunge your metal garden fork deep into the ground, and cut right through a live cable. If there was no RCD fitted you could potentially die in a matter of milliseconds. If you are running electrical wiring underground, make sure you use specially designed housing that covers the bare wires and protects them so if you do dig into the ground, you hit the housing rather than the live wire.
